Finding your first connection

4 tips for finding helpful people who can give you career advice

Once you've finished setting up your profile you can start getting in touch with people in the network who can help you. Here are a few tips for finding people fast:

  1. Review your privacy settings and make sure you're visible to other students and alumni. If you're invisible in the network, no one can see you until you reach out to them, so you may miss out on opportunities.
  2. Browse your recommended members list to find people we think you should connect with based on your major, goals, clubs/organizations, and career interests.
  3. If you're not 100% sure what you're looking for, use the Explore tab and start browsing for people by the industry they work in or by the communities they belong to.
  4. Use the advanced search tool to find people working in a particular city, industry, job, or company. Our filters also let you find people who can help you with a particular task or goal, such as getting your resume reviewed or finding a job shadow opportunity.

When you send a first message or request a call with someone, be sure to include a friendly personal greeting and to let them know exactly what you're looking for.
